NEW YORK (October 29, 2022) -

The National Women’s Soccer League in partnership with Nationwide announced today that the Kansas City Current and Global FC have been named the recipients of the 2022 Nationwide Community Impact Award, a season-long, community-focused initiative that promotes community partners and local service projects chosen and led by each NWSL club. In addition to the award, Global FC will receive $25,000 to support their organization’s efforts. “Congratulations to the Kansas City Current and Global FC for earning the 2022 Nationwide Community Impact Award,” said Ramon Jones, Nationwide’s EVP and chief marketing officer. “Nationwide is proud to support the Current’s advocacy of Global FC’s mission to use soccer as a way to create a community of belonging for first generation immigrant and refugee youth.” As part of the league-wide initiative, each team partnered with Nationwide to select one season-long community partner. Each community organization received a grant to support its program and serve as the focus of a team-led service project, with a designated player ambassador to champion the effort. “We are thrilled to partner with the KC Current and are humbled to receive this award,” said Mariya D. Goodbrake, Executive Director of Global FC. “Thank you on behalf of our resilient youth, and our extraordinary volunteers who carry our mission forward.” Originally created as a community development project to assist refugees during resettlement, Global FC uses soccer to bridge socioeconomic disparities between communities through the formation of an inclusive sports culture. The organization provides underserved youth with quality soccer opportunities and access to first-rate facilities, leagues and tournaments. In 2021 alone, over 170 hours of nationwide Olympic Development Program opportunities were offered to youth. In addition to soccer, Global FC provides year-round education and mentoring support to uplift youth to their greatest potential.
