The highly anticipated return of [Sydney Leroux](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/4c3ul31a4mf94cclrayr43g7p) and [Amy Rodriguez](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/2m8rcswd742t7d1j8gml38ogl) to the NWSL seemed to be off to a dream start. Leroux scored seven minutes into the first half and Rodriguez scored shortly after the start of the second half.But just a few minutes after Rodriguez’s goal, the forward was down with what appeared to be a left knee injury and was subbed out of the match. “She left the game, we don’t know what it is we’re just hoping it’s not as bad as the first impression was,” FC Kansas City head coach Vlatko Andonovski said after the match in a team press release. Both Leroux and Rodriguez missed the 2016 season because of pregnancy. Leroux’s goal came on one of her first touches of the match. Captain [Becky Sauerbrunn](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/dpi1jk3r0cyn9f9ote89781jp) served a long ball up the field that Leroux ran onto the end of and struck one-time past Breakers goalkeeper [Abby Smith](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/706rwdwv4re27svfmlo7na3th). Leroux’s last NWSL goal came in 2015 when she was a member of the the Western New York Flash. Rodriguez’s goal came in the 48th minute off an assist from [Shea Groom](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/19udx179xugqp84qo9rsq0nhl), FC Kansas City’s top scorer in 2016. Rodriguez started the play by crossing it to Groom who then found Rodriguez in the box to double the lead. The last NWSL goal for Rodriguez was the game-winner in the 2015 NWSL Championship, a 1-0 win over Seattle for FC Kansas City. Leroux could’ve had at least two more, rocketing a shot off the post in each half. Rodriguez also came close to adding to her total, but was stopped by a few strong Smith saves. The game also marked the NWSL debut of midfielder [Rose Lavelle](https://www.nwslsoccer.com/players/view/4j3kopvvd3iej6p4h9z36giqd), this year’s No. 1 overall draft pick by the Boston Breakers.
