**KANSAS CITY, Kans.** – San Diego Wave FC defeated the Kansas City Current on the road, 2-0, with two first half goals lifting the visiting Wave to a first win in three games after back-to-back losses. Meanwhile, back-to-back losses are what the Current have faced after last week’s loss to Angel City on the road, leaving the club in 11 ^th place on six points through seven matches this year.
San Diego got off the mark in the 26 ^th minute as a shot via forward Alex Morgan ricocheted off the post and back in off Kansas City goalkeeper Adrianna Franch as a bit of unfortunate play saw the hosts go down just over midway through the first half. A long ball from Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan was knocked down into the path of midfielder Sofia Jakobsson. Jakobsson then attempted to slide in and shoot but was met with the sliding challenge of a Kansas City defender as the ball then squirmed wide. Rushing onto it from there was Morgan, who was able to sneak a low effort around Franch and off the post, where an unfortunate bounce for the shotstopper saw the ball cross over the line after bouncing off her back.
San Diego managed the game well throughout the duration of the first half and would then go on to double its lead in the 44 ^th minute through a well-struck effort by midfielder Bella Briede. The Wave were prodding around the Current penalty area when a deflected clearance by defender then allowed her free space in the 18-yard box to create a chance. Cutting up field in the right side of the box, Westphal then rolled a pass to Briede, who finished with aplomb for a second goal as the half neared its end.
Seeking a way back into the match, the Current were awarded a free kick from around 22 yards out in the 64 ^th minute with midfielder Debinha over the ball and ready to fire on goal. The Brazilian opted to try and pick out the far post with a dipping, powerful drive toward the top left corner, only for Sheridan to leap and make a great save with her right hand to keep her side’s two-goal lead intact.
Then, in the 71 ^st minute, Debinha was back on free kick duty with a chance just a yard or two further from goal then her opportunity a few minutes prior. Debinha then rocketed an effort equally as powerful, but would only find herself disappointed as the ball landed on the roof of the net unable to sneak under the crossbar.
Only needing to see the game through from there, the Wave hung on for the 2-0 win and return to San Diego with three more points in hand.
