NJ/NY Gotham FC vs. Chicago Red Stars
Harrison, New Jersey – The host, NJ/NY Gotham FC (5-1-4, 19 points) scored in both halves to earn the 2-1 win over the Chicago Red Stars (5-5-2, 17 points). Gotham FC has now started with just one loss in its first 10 matches which marks the first time having only one loss through the first 10 matches of the season.
NJ/NY had early offensive pressure and almost found a goal in the 2' as Ifeoma Onumonu received the ball inside the box with just Cassie Miller to beat but Miller as able to dive to make the save to keep the game scoreless. Gotham was finally able to capitalize in the offensive end in the 45+3 minute when Caprice Dydasco sent a long pass into the box that found Allie Long who redirected it into the back of the net, to give NJ/NY the 1-0 lead. Midway through the second half, NJ/NY was awarded with a penalty kick after a foul from behind inside the attacking box. Margaret Purce calmly stepped up to the spot and gave Gotham the 2-0 lead in the 70'. Purce has now scored in 13 different NWSL matches with her team winning 12 of those (12-0-1). The Red Stars would not give up throughout the match as they found the back of the net in the 90+6' after Katie Johnson passed it to Makenzy Doniak who spun and fired it to the left side of the net just past the diving goalkeeper. Gotham has not lost a match this season when scoring the first goal recording a 4-0-2 record. Chicago will now head home to host the Washington Spirit on Sunday, August 1 with kickoff set for 6:00 PM ET. Gotham shifts their attention to the Dash as they will travel to take on Houston on August 1 at 7:00 PM ET.
