Harrison, New Jersey – In each side’s opening match of the 2021 NWSL regular season, NJ/NY Gotham FC (1-0-0, three points) defeated the Houston Dash (0-1-0, zero points) by a score of 1-0 at Red Bull Arena. The match marked the third time Gotham FC had played at the venue as a franchise, and the first time they earned three points in Harrison.

Despite having the minority of possession in the first half, Houston Dash challenged Kailen Sheridan with thirteen shots, although only two would need to be saved by the Canadian goalkeeper. Gotham would get on the board first, as Canadian international Évelyne Viens found a sprinting Midge Purce. The U.S. international took a touch past the defender and slotted the ball home to Jane Campbell's far post to give Gotham the lead. Gotham were content to manage the game in the second half, while Houston was forced to chase the game in search of the equalizer. The balance of the second half would favor the visitors, as they ended up with the advantage in shots, shots blocked, corners, and crosses. However, none of the Dash's chances troubled Gotham's goal, and Midge Purce's strike would prove to be the game-winning goal. Gotham now heads on the road, facing the Chicago Red Stars on May 22nd at 8:00pm ET. The Dash will return home, hosting Kansas City on Sunday, May 23rd, at 7:00pm ET. Both matches can be streamed live in the United States on Paramount+.
