Match Recap: Mewis, McDonald fire Courage to victory against OL Reign

North Carolina Courage vs. OL Reign | June 19, 4pm ET, CBS

Cary, North Carolina –

The North Carolina Courage (2-2-1, ten points) defeated the OL Reign (1-4-1, four points) at WakeMed Soccer Park Saturday evening in Cary, North Carolina. The lone standout moment of the first half also was the half’s only goal. Right before the beginning of extra time, Merritt Mathias was able to find the head of Jessica McDonald with a looping cross. The World Cup winner, seeing Sarah Bouhaddi off her line, floated a header into the net – giving the home side the lead. The Courage headed into the locker-room with an advantage in shots, shots on target, corners, and crosses. Some second half star substitutions made their presence known as the game came to life after the break. U.S. international Sam Mewis slotted home a goal in the 77 th minute, which moved Lynn Williams into sole possession of the all-time NWSL assists record. OL Reign would make the final five minutes tough, however, with Jess Fishlock chipping Casey Murphy from over thirty yards out to pull back one for the visitors. OL Reign would not get another goal, however, having all three points go to North Carolina. The victory was the 75th of Paul Riley's NWSL career, a feat that has not yet been achieved by any head coach in the league's history. The Courage now head on the road, visiting Racing Louisville FC on June 23 rd , kicking off at 7:30pm ET. OL Reign will return home, hosting the Chicago Red Stars on June 22 nd at 10:00pm ET.
