Match Recap: OL Reign win Cascadia Derby, defeat Portland Thorns 2-1

Goals from Rapinoe, Cruz lead visitors to victory

– OL Reign (1-0-1, four points) earned a Cascadia Derby victory over the Portland Thorns (1-1-0, three points) on Sunday evening at Providence Park. The result brings an end to the Thorns run of four-games unbeaten in the fixture, which was the longest for this derby since 2013. The first half delivered the action that a derby of this magnitude deserves. Portland struck first, with Christine Sinclair lifting a shot over Karen Bardsley from outside of the box in the fourth minute. Megan Rapinoe would be denied by Adrianna Franch soon thereafter, but would get her goal off of a bending free kick in the ninth minute to tie the match. Costa Rican international Shirley Cruz would give OL Reign the lead only six minutes later, slotting a shot past Franch. Three goals were scored in the opening fifteen minutes, but OL Reign would head to the break with a 2-1 advantage. The second half started the same as the first, with Karen Bardsley denying a curling shot from Sophia Smith in the 48 th minute. The home side would apply a majority of the second half pressure, with Christine Sinclair and Morgan Weaver both sending shots inches wide of the post. Lindsey Horan netted a stunning header from close range late in the second half, but it was flagged offside. Tziarra King nearly gave OL Reign an insurance goal in the 80 th minute, but Franch was able to push the shot off the post and out of play. Despite facing twenty-one shots, OL Reign were able to hang on for the derby victory. The Thorns have a quick turnaround, heading to Orlando to face the Pride on May 26 th at 7:00pm ET. OL Reign head home, hosting the Washington Spirit at 7:00pm ET on May 30 th . Both games can be streamed via Paramount+.
