Match Recap: Gotham FC left frustrated in draw against Racing Louisville

Racing Louisville FC vs. NJ/NY Gotham FC

Louisville, Kentucky – Racing Louisville welcomed NJ/NY Gotham FC to Lynn Family Stadium on Thursday and the points are shared after a 1-1 draw.

The breakthrough came seven minutes in when Carli Lloyd teed up Ifeoma Onumonu and her shot trickled over the line for 1-0. Needing a win to clinch a playoff spot, the early goal was a huge boost for the visitors.

However, against the run of play down at the other end, the hosts were able to trouble Gotham’s back line but each of their attempts fell just short.

The match continued to be a nervy affair as both teams battled for possession. Nothing would be added to the scoreline leaving things 1-0 at half-time.

Coming out after the break the visitors looked to put the game to bed as they continued their hunt for a second goal. Racing Louisville, though, had other plans.

Onumonu saw a shot hit off the woodwork and the hosts found themselves with an opportunity to counter. Katie McClure teed up CeCe Kizer who slipped the ball past Kailen Sheridan for 1-1 just seven minutes into the second half.

After the equalizer, the match was blown wide open and throughout the final half hour chances flew at either end of the pitch. Gotham, in particular, was visibly frustrated as they struggled to break down Racing Louisville’s tight-knit defense.

Late in the game Sheridan was forced to make a finger-tip save on Cheyna Matthews who almost won it for the hosts in the dying moments.

In the end, the points are shared between ninth-placed Racing Louisville and fifth-placed Gotham. These two teams will meet one last time on Sunday in the NWSL’s final regular-season match of the year.
