Seattle Reign FC forward Nahomi Kawasumi has been named the Player of the Week for Week 5 by the NWSL Media Association, after scoring a goal and earning an NWSL-record four assists in Seattle’s 6-2 win over the Washington Spirit.She also became the first player in league history to be directly involved in five goals in one game. [Youtube oembed has failed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QbJ-7FYSLY4] Kawasumi scored her goal in the 68th minute and assisted on goals by midfielder Christine Nairn (20th minute), forward Beverly Yanez (35th minute), forward Megan Rapinoe (71st minute) and forward Lindsay Elston (79th minute). Lianne Sanderson previously held the record for assists in one game with three, which she accomplished as a member of the Boston Breakers in a win over the Washington Spirit in 2013. Five players had previously contributed on four goals in one game: Jazmine Reeves (Boston Breakers), Verónica Boquete (Portland Thorns FC), Rapinoe (Seattle Reign FC), Jessica McDonald (Western New York Flash) and Nadia Nadim (Portland Thorns FC). It’s the fourth time Kawasumi has won the Player of the Week honor in her NWSL career and the 16th time a Seattle player has won. It’s the third time in five weeks a member of the Reign has won, as Kawasumi joins goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer and midfielder Jess Fishlock who won in Week 1 and Week 2, respectively. The only player to win Player of the Week more times than Kawasumi is former Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn, who won six times in 2015 on her way to being named NWSL MVP. The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
