Nominee: Sam Hiatt

Community Partner: Candlelighters Oregon

Sam Hiatt’s return to the Pacific Northwest wasn’t just a career move - it was a
homecoming rooted in family, values, and purpose. Now in her sixth professional
season, the Portland Thorns defender is exactly where she wants to be: close to her
loved ones and the community that shaped her.

Her perspective on service deepened in 2020, when her younger brother was
diagnosed with a rare lymphoma just days before her professional debut. Navigating the
start of her career alongside the emotional and logistical challenges of his treatment
taught Sam the quiet strength of caretaking, and the value of community support
systems for families affected by pediatric cancer. It’s why she now champions programs
that provide those families with connection, relief, and encouragement.

Sam’s commitment to others shows up both on and off the field. She mentors through
Female Footballers, bakes birthday treats for foster youth with For Goodness Cakes,
and has long been involved with inclusive initiatives from the Special Olympics to elder
care at her grandmother’s adult family home in Tacoma.

In every chapter of her journey, Sam finds ways to give back with heart and intention -
always rooted in her belief that compassion and consistency are cornerstones of real
community impact.
