In the opening matches of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, several NWSL players took center stage, making significant contributions to their teams' performances on the global stage.
Melanie Barcenas (San Diego Wave FC) delivered a standout moment for the U.S. in their 3-1 loss to Spain, showcasing her attacking prowess. After an unfortunate own goal in the third minute put the U.S. behind, Barcenas responded with a stunning 22nd-minute strike, her third goal for the U.S. U-17s. Despite the eventual defeat, Barcenas’ goal kept the Americans in contention for much of the match, and her quick play was complemented by strong performances from fellow NWSL players Kimmi Ascanio (San Diego Wave), Kennedy Fuller (Angel City FC), and Ainsley McCammon (Seattle Reign FC). Fuller, the team’s captain, also provided the assist for Barcenas' equalizer, showcasing leadership and resilience throughout the match.
Meanwhile, Casey Phair (Angel City FC), a key forward for South Korea and a rising star in international soccer, displayed her calm under pressure in their 1-1 draw against Colombia. Known for her historic debut in the senior FIFA Women’s World Cup at just 16 years old, Phair once again proved to be a difference-maker by converting a crucial penalty to secure the draw.
These NWSL players have already made a strong impact in the tournament, and their performances will be key as the U.S. and South Korea both look to advance from their group.
The U.S. U-17 and South Korea U-17 squads will face off in group play next Tuesday, October 22nd, at 4:00 p.m. ET. Fans in the U.S. can watch on Paramount+, and fans in other countries can watch on FIFA+.
