CHICAGO (September 2, 2021) - The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that OL Reign forward Megan Rapinoe has been named the Player of the Month for the month of August by the NWSL Media Association.

The leading scorer this month, Rapinoe notched four goals in back-to-back Reign victories over NJ/NY Gotham FC and Portland Thorns FC, leading her team to a solid 3-1-0 record throughout the month. Rapinoe, who recently returned from the Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal, opened her scoring tear in OL Reign’s 3-2 comeback victory over Gotham FC, scoring the equalizer in the 77th minute before putting away the game winner in stoppage time. The forward continued her offensive streak in the Reign’s rivalry matchup against Portland, scoring early in the match before converting from the penalty spot to lift her side in front of a NWSL record-breaking attendance. Thanks to her performance throughout the month, Rapinoe sits tied for third in goal-scoring with five tallies, putting herself in contention for this season’s golden boot award. Fellow OL Reign teammate Jess Fishlock finished second in voting, while Portland midfielder Angela Salem came in third. The NWSL Player of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
