On a night that meant so much to the Portland Thorns, the night where they celebrated one of the cornerstones of their club, Christine Sinclair, one of the faces of the next generation showed out.
With Sinc watching on, Olivia Moultrie scored her first career brace, securing a 2-1 win for the Thorns over Bay FC. After falling 1-0 in the first half, Moultrie and the Thorns came roaring back in the second.
The first goal was a low left corner rocked from inside the box, teed up by Sam Coffey. The go-ahead goal came on a free kick just outside the box with a strike that sailed under Bay’s Jordan Silkowitz.
Her fifth and sixth goals of the season are her first since turning 20 and breaking the record for goals scored by a teenager. She also became the first Thorns player to score two goals on free kicks in the same season.
There is no better way to honor Sinclair than by doing what she did so many times – making history.
After the game, the poetic moment was tied up with a bow when Sinclair crashed Moultrie’s post-game interview. The newly inducted member of the Thorns Hall of Fame slunk behind Moultrie and wrapped her in a congratulatory hug.
It was a moment that seemed to reflect exactly what Sinclair spoke about during the induction ceremony.
“My hope is that this legacy isn’t just about me, but about what comes next, that the next generation of young stars, especially kids here tonight, will believe anything is possible when you give your heart to the game,” she said.
And on Saturday night, Sinclair got to see firsthand how that legacy has already grown.
