Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher has been named Week 6’s Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association. Naeher earns the honor following a 12-save performance vs. the North Carolina Courage on Sunday, May 6. The Courage tested Naeher all day taking 42 shots and putting 15 on target.Naeher’s performance also earned her Week 6’s Save of the Week. This is the fourth time she has been honored as NWSL Player of the Week with her past nods being in Week 5 (2016), Week 17 (2015), and Week 18 (2014.) The Red Stars kept the lead most of the game with forward Sam Kerr scoring her first goal of the season in the 37th minute to put them up 0-1. Naeher came up big for her team over and over again making notable stops on Courage midfielder McCall Zerboni at the 17th minute and then on two different Crystal Dunn chances in the 49th and 66th minute, respectively. Naeher finished the game with a team-high 74 touches and made three clearances, according to Opta. The Red Stars went 0-1-1 in Week 6, with Naeher earning four saves in the Red Stars 2-0 loss to the Orlando Pride on Wednesday, May 2. Naeher collected 16 saves in the Red Stars’ two games in Week 6. Naeher has 27 saves so far this season for the league’s second-best. In eight games played, she has recorded two shutouts, on April 14 against Utah Royals FC and on April 18 against the Houston Dash. Chicago is ranked third in the league (2-2-4) with 10 total points. Naeher and the Red Stars will next host the Houston Dash on Saturday, May 12.
