NEW YORK (July 6, 2023) – The National Women’s Soccer League announced today that Portland Thorns FC striker Sophia Smith has been named the Player of the Month, presented by EA SPORTS, for the month of June by the NWSL Media Association and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.

The 22-year-old forward continued her commanding 2023 Golden Boot campaign in June, recording six goals in four matches to bring her season total up to a league-leading 10 goals across 13 contests. Kicking off her four-game scoring streak on June 3, Smith scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win over OL Reign to level the 2023 Cascadia Rivalry series at 1-1. The two teams will square off in the third match of the series on August 6. Smith followed up with her sixth goal of the season in a loss to the Orlando Pride before scoring another game-opening tally to lay the groundwork for a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Red Stars on June 18. Ending the month in electric fashion, Smith became the youngest player in NWSL history to score 30 goals in the regular season thanks to a hat trick performance in Portland’s 4-2 win against the Washington Spirit. The result also marked the second three-goal game of the season for Smith, making the Windsor, Colorado native just the third player in league history to record two hat tricks in a single season. The NWSL Player of the Month presented by EA Sports is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent. Votes are based on player performances from both regular season play and the 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup.
