Christen Press celebrated her 100 caps with the U.S. women’s national team with a goal as the United States won 3-0 on Friday night at StubHub Center in Carson, California.[Empty Body] The Utah Royals FC forward scored her 45th international goal in the 59th minute after a string of U.S. passes from a trio of second half subs. Courage midfielder McCall Zerboni hit Red Stars midfielder Morgan Brian in stride to start the play. Brian sent a through ball to Spirit forward Mallory Pugh, who then sent a low cross into the penalty area. Sky Blue FC midfielder Carli Lloyd slid for it, but the ball skipped to Press, who hit a high, hard shot over the line to give the U.S. the 3-0 lead. [Empty Body] The game was Press’ 104th cap, after earning No. 100 back in June — and the Los Angeles native was able to celebrate the occasion in front of her hometown fans on Friday night. Press wore the captain’s armband and played all 90 minutes in the win. The United States took a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to two Tobin Heath (Portland Thorns FC) corner kicks. The first came in 8th minute, and found the head of Stanford defender Tierna Davidson. The goal is Davidson’s first international goal. [Empty Body] The second came when Heath found the head of Chicago Red Stars defender Julie Ertz at the near post in the 32nd minute. Ertz headed it behind her and across the face of the goal, where Chile defender Carla Guerrero redirected it into her own net for an own goal. It was a bit of a weird night as the United States had a Press penalty kick goal disallowed at the end of the first half. Heath won the penalty after being taken down in the box, and Press converted the kick from the spot. But the goal was called back by referee Katja Koroleva, and a free kick was then taken by Chile due to what appeared to be encroachment. But both teams appeared to be inside the area when the kick was taken, and that Crystal Dunn had her foot stepped on as well. But no matter what, the FIFA Laws of the Game say the kick should’ve been retaken, if encroachment was indeed the call. Early in the second half, the USWNT also had a Carli Lloyd shot appear to go over the line but not be ruled a goal. The game marked the first-ever meeting between Chile and the United States. Chile has already qualified for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the United States will take part in Concacaf’s qualifying tournament in October. The game is also the 20th straight game without a loss for the United States. Eighteen players dressed for the match, with Adrianna Franch, Casey Short, Abby Dahlkemper, Kelley O’Hara and Amy Rodriguez not on the gameday roster. Alyssa Naeher, Emily Sonnett, Davidson, Becky Sauerbrunn, Dunn, Ertz, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Heath, Alex Morgan and Press were the starters. The United States made four subs at halftime, with Lloyd, Pugh, Zerboni and Brian entering for Morgan, Heath, Horan and Lavelle. It was a Courage for Courage swap in the 61st as Sam Mewis replaced Dunn and UCLA’s Hailie Mace** came on in the 74th minute to replace Ertz. Pride goalkeeper Ashlyn Harris was the only unused sub.
