NWSL clubs competing in the first-ever CONCACAF W Champions Cup had a thrilling journey through the group stage, with two out of the three clubs advancing to the finals set for May 2025. Here’s a recap of their performances:
NJ/NY Gotham FC started the tournament strong, winning 4-0 over Alajuelense (LIGA MX Femenil) on September 5 before drawing Monterrey (LIGA MX Femenil) 0-0 on September 19th. They bounced back emphatically with a huge 13-0 victory against Frazsiers Whip (Jamaican Women Premiere League) on October 2, where 8 different Gotham players scored. Lynn Williams and Yazmeen Ryan were instrumental in the attack throughout the match, both scoring a hat trick against the Jamaican club. Gotham’s final group match against Tigres UANL on October 16 ended in a 4-4 draw, with both teams putting on an offensive show. Gotham's impressive scoring run secured their status as one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament and a spot in the finals next spring.
The Portland Thorns kicked off their Champions Cup campaign with a commanding 3-1 victory over Club América on September 4, but stumbled in their next match, falling 3-2 to San Diego Wave on September 18. Undeterred by the setback, Portland responded, defeating Santa Fe 2-1 on October 1 before delivering a statement win— defeating Vancouver Whitecaps Girls Elite (League1 British Columbia) 6-0 on October 15. Their dominant performances and strong goal differential secured them the second spot in the group over San Diego, punching their ticket to the finals in May 2025.
The San Diego Wave FC kicked off their campaign with a solid 2-0 victory over Santa Fe (La Primera División Femenina de Panamá) on August 20. María Sánchez and Kristen McNabb both found the back of the net to secure the Wave’s first three points. They followed up with a dramatic 3-2 win over fellow NWSL side Portland Thorns on September 18, with Sánchez again playing a key role by scoring a hat trick. San Diego again tasted victory on October 1st by winning 2-0 over the Vancouver Whitecaps. However, they were unable to get on the scoresheet on October 15, suffering a narrow 0-1 defeat to Club América (LIGA MX Femenil). Although tied in points with Portland in their group, their weaker goal differential meant their Champions Cup journey has ended.
