Recognizing Trailblazing Women in the NWSL

February 2, 2022 marks a day fostering and celebrating women and girls' participation in sports. As we celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, we asked our clubs to call out a woman who is making a difference in the sports community. From former players to technical staff to industry creatives, the league is filled with strong women who are breaking down barriers and paving the way for other girls and women participating in sports on and off the field.

Amy Griffin – Executive Director, OL Reign Academy & Girls Academy President** Amy Griffin has made a profound impact in women’s soccer. Griffin went on to play for the U.S. Women’s National Team from 1987–1991 and was on the squad that won the first ever FIFA Women's World Cup in 1991. Griffin then pivoted into the coaching scene, where she quickly flourished. She was one of the first nine women to obtain a United States Soccer Federation level "A" coaching license. It is undeniable that Griffin is a talented coach, but beyond that, she is sited as a mentor by many of those that have had the opportunity to work with her.
