Chicago, Illinois – The Chicago Red Stars (0-1-2, two points) shared the points with visiting Kansas City (0-1-1, one point) as the two sides played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday evening.

The first half saw a dominant display from the home side, with the Red Stars peppering Abby Smith for six shots – although only one made its way on target. Mallory Pugh, the USWNT standout, was substituted after thirty-five minutes in her Chicago debut. Kansas City turned up the pressure on the Red Stars in the second half, aided by the substitution of Canadian international Jordyn Listro. The second half saw both goals scored in a back-and-forth period of action. Amy Rodriguez opened the scoring in the 80th minute, pouncing on a loose ball and wrapping a finish around Alyssa Naeher’s far post. Chicago answered right back, with Katie Johnson slotting home an equalizer only two minutes later. The match saw the return of a litany of international stars returning to the NWSL for their first action of 2021. Alyssa Naeher, Tierna Davidson, Julie Ertz, Desiree Scott, Chloe Logarzo, and Mariana Larroquette joined the aforementioned Pugh and Listro in making their season debuts. The Red Stars will finish their Challenge Cup with a visit to OL Reign on Tuesday, April 27th at 10:00pm ET. Kansas City returns home to play their first home match of 2021 on Monday, April 26th against the Houston Dash at 8:30pm ET. Both matches can be streamed in the United States via Paramount+.
