The Friday before the NWSL Championship, CBS Mornings brought the show on the road, broadcasting live from PayPal Park in San Jose, and on Monday morning, Rose Lavelle and Emily Sonnett returned the favor.
Before heading off to continue celebrating with their teammates in the streets of New York, teammates and pals Lavelle and Sonnett stopped by to talk with anchors Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Tony Dokoupil about Gotham’s NWSL Championship win over the Washington Spirit.
Lavelle and Sonnett talked about Saturday night’s celebrations and which Frank Sinatra songs they sang, while the anchors tried to get the ever-humble Lavelle to talk about being MVP.
“As a former athlete, I get it,” he said. “Keep it real. It still feels good to have, right?”
“Honestly, it was such a good team goal,” Lavelle said.
While this was Lavelle’s first NWSL Championship, it was the third for Sonnett, who has played more playoff minutes than anyone else in league history.
“Something made it really special being with Gotham. It wasn't the best year, but being able to have these really close connections … it's really, really special,” she said.
The 2025 NWSL Championship was played in front of a sold out crowd of 18,000 fans. That’s a far cry from the attendance in both Lavelle and Sonnett’s first few years in the league.
“This isn't a moment. This is a movement,” Lavelle said. “This is support that's here to stay, and it's just going to keep getting bigger and better,” Lavelle said. “To be able to play in front of a sold out crowd in the Bay was really special and surreal.”
