Two-time Rookie of the Month anchors team to first-ever playoff appearance

The National Women’s Soccer League announced today San Diego Wave FC defender Naomi Girma as Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for the months of September and October by the NWSL Media Association.?The honor marks her second Rookie of the Month distinction this year.

NEW YORK (October 14, 2022) - The National Women’s Soccer League announced today San Diego Wave FC defender Naomi Girma as Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for the months of September and October by the NWSL Media Association.?The honor marks her second Rookie of the Month distinction this year.

Appearing in every minute of action for Wave FC in September, Girma has been a consistent presence on the club’s back line all season. The shutdown defender’s play helped to hold two games scoreless in September, securing San Diego’s league-leading eighth and ninth clean sheets of the season. Girma, who has been named to the Best XI of the Month four times this season, finished the regular season with 95 clearances, 24 interceptions and 14 blocks in 19 matches. The California native also donned the captain’s armband?in the team’s regular-season finale against the North Carolina Courage on September 30. The NWSL Rookie of the Month presented by Ally is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
