Acronyms unite! The Venn diagram of the NWSL and TLC overlapped in a very specific way last weekend when the San Diego Wave celebrated a "90 Day Fiancé" star.
Kimberly Menzies served as San Diego's honorary "Wavemaker" on May 25. A Wavemaker is someone who represents strength, leadership, and impact in San Diego and they celebrated at every Wave home game.
As part of the Wave's Military Appreciation Match, Menzies was invited to be the Wavemaker to honor her time in the Army. Her duties on game day included leading the crowd in a W-A-V-E chant and banging
Menzies was only 19 when she joined the Army as an adminstrative specialist in1989 and served in Operation Desert Storm. She was active in the military until 1996 after her son, Jamal, was born.
Menzies wrote on Instagram after the game about the experience.
"Memorial Day!!! ❤️🤍💙 What an honor it was to be the wave maker at the @sandiegowavefc game last night! This was one of the coolest things l’ve ever done! To be honored for my military service was so special."
During a visit to the pitch, Menzies even got a photo with Wave goalkeeper Kailen Sheriden. Menzies was joined at the game and on the pitch by Jamal, who also stars in the TLC show alongside his mother.
She first hit the small screen in 2021 on "90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days," where she navigated a relationship with a Nigerian rapper, Usamn "Sojaboy" Umar. The couple appeared again on "90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After?" She also appears on the spinoffs "90 Day Fiancé Pillow Talk" and "90 Day Diaries."
Wave fans never know who will show up to hit the drum on a match day. Past Wavemakers include YouTube creator Nicole Laeno and Ronald Gladden, the breakout star of 2023's "Jury Duty."
