The number 13 gets a bad rap as an indicator of bad luck, but it never seemed to bring the great Alex Morgan down.
And now in San Diego, lucky number13 will forever belong to Morgan.
The Wave announced Tuesday that they are retiring Morgan's jersey, becoming the first player in their club's history to have her number set aside.
Morgan leaves behind big boots to fill not only as the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, but as a leader who helped craft the Wave culture from its inception. In their inaugural season, Morgan captained the Wave to their first-ever playoff appearance, and in their second season, she led the Wave to victory in the 2023 NWSL Shield.

“Alex’s legacy goes far beyond goals and accolades. She helped lay the foundation for this Club and elevated the standard for what women’s soccer is today,” said Lauren Leichtman, Governor of San Diego Wave FC. “She made this city her home, inspired our fans and community, and helped define who we are. Her impact will be felt for generations, and it’s only fitting that her number becomes a permanent part of Wave FC history.”
The Wave will honor Morgan’s career at a jersey retirement ceremony on Sunday, September 7 at Snapdragon Stadium. Fans can secure tickets for the ceremony by purchasing the aptly named San Diegoat Mini Plan, which includes tickets to the match, as well as matches on August 9 and October 18. Fans can also subscribe to be part of the Wave’s email subscriber list for a presale opportunity at 1 p.m. PT. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 2 p.m. PT.
