The San Diego Wave are your new 2025 World Sevens Football Champions, beating Liga MX Femenil’s Tigres, 3-0 on Sunday night in Fort Lauderdale. In the second iteration of the tournament, the San Diego Wave took home the trophy, bragging rights, and a $2 million prize.
Mackenzy Robbe opened up scoring in the first half, and Adriana Leon closed the deal with a second-half brace to secure the win.
This is just the second seven-vs.-seven style tournament for the organization, with the inaugural tournament taking place in May of this year. The invitational offered a chance for the Wave to end 2025 on a high note after losing against the Thorns in the NWSL quarterfinals.
“I thought after Portland that this would not be the end of our season. I thought, ‘It’s impossible it’s going to end this way,’” head coach Jonas Eidevall told his team. “And it was because it ends here. We’re the champions. We won, and we won it our way.”
The format of the tournament lends itself to a high-energy environment. A smaller field, rolling substitutions and two 15-minute halves make it quick paced, and every game had music to match the vibe.
Players were encouraged to have fun with walkouts, and the San Diego Wave accepted that challenge enthusiastically.
Gia Corley and Delphine Cascarino brought their dance moves. Hanna Lundkvist and Jordan Fusco hit them with a classic: “The Parent Trap” handshake. Kenza Dali emerged through a cloud of chalk a la LeBron James.
The Wave rode the vibes through the weekend, clearly having a blast if social media is any indication. In one hilarious moment, Kailen Sheridan and her teammates gave her baby a welcome fit for future royalty.
In a dramatic reenactment of “The Lion King,” Sheridan hoisted Skyler, her daughter, into the air like Mufasa presented Simba to the Pride Lands. The Wave bowed in respect to their leader.
Not a bad business trip for the Wave.
