In the NWSL, any team can win any week. It often comes down to a difference maker, a player who changes the momentum of a match with leadership, high performance, and energy.
Former U.S. Women’s National Team goalkeeper Saskia Webber is now a broadcaster for NWSL+, keeping a close eye on matches week to week. As the second half of the season kicks off on Friday, August 1st, Webber shares which players she thinks will be the biggest momentum changers for their team.
In no particular order, these are her five Difference Makers to Watch in the second half of the season.
Esther González
“Esther González just claimed the Golden Boot for the UEFA Women’s Euros and is leading the NWSL race as well. Esther has emerged as one of the top forwards in the world with her explosiveness on the ball and her ability to create opportunities in tight spaces. She will be the driving force for Gotham coming into the second half of the season as they make a push for the playoffs.”
Michelle Cooper
“Michelle Cooper is having her breakout season in the NWSL. Her ability to punish teams in a multitude of ways has been on full display. She’s using the width to draw defenders out and creating space for other runners in and around the box. She’s getting isolated, taking on or driving to the endline to deliver the service. Cooper has been a vital part of Kansas City’s success thus far.”
Gift Monday
“With the absence of Trinity Rodman, Gift Monday has stepped up in a huge way for Washington to fill the gap with her versatility across the front line. She’s able to invert when needed or get isolated on the flanks. Her pace on and off the ball has allowed Monday to notch four goals in 10 games. It only brings depth to the Spirit’s attack with the possible return of Rodman.”
Avery Patterson
“Avery Patterson has emerged as one of the top young defensive stars both in the NWSL and with the USWNT. As an attacking outside back, she has the confidence to push forward with a penetrative touch when given space and will look to shoot from distance or break lines with quality services. Her ‘never say die’ mentality on defense has been a consistent bright spot for the Dash this season.”
Sam Coffey
“The General in the midfield is a true leader by example. Sam Coffey’s ability to hold possession and dictate the pace and play in the center of the pitch is the backbone for the Portland Thorns. Described as the engine of the team, she allows Portland to press higher and be more effective in the attack.”
