Seventy-Four NWSL Players Called Up to International Rosters for September Matches

Seventy-four NWSL stars will represent their respective countries during international play in September as teams gear up for the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Each NWSL club has at least two players on international rosters, with the league representing 24 different countries.

Each NWSL club has at least two players on international rosters, with the league representing 24 different countries.

Below are some notable facts:

  • The Washington Spirit has the most players on international rosters with nine, including Canadian defender Gabrielle Carle, Irish forward Marissa Sheva, Panamanian forward Riley Tanner and six USWNT players, with keeper Aubrey Kingsbury making the roster along with forwards Ashley Hatch and Trinity Rodman, midfielders Ashley Sanchez and Andi Sullivan and rookie midfielder Chloe Ricketts, who will play on the U-17 team.

  • The North Carolina Courage and OL Reign are close behind, each with eight players on international rosters.

  • Angel City FC, North Carolina Courage, Portland Thorns FC and Racing Louisville FC each have players rostered for six different countries. Angel City’s roster includes French midfielder Amandine Henry, Japanese forward Jun Endo, Mexican forward Scarlett Camberos, New Zealand defender Ali Riley, Scottish forward Claire Emslie, American forward Alyssa Thompson, and American defender M.A. Vignola. North Carolina features Brazilian star Kerolin, Canadian defender Sydney Collins, Denmark’s Mille Gejl and Rikke Madsen, Irish midfielder Denise O’Sullivan, Japanese midfielder Narumi Miura and USWNT’s Emily Fox and Casey Murphy. Portland will be represented by Canadian team captain Christine Sinclair, Costa Rican midfielder Rocky Rodriguez, Finnish midfielder Natalie Kuikka, Japanese midfielder Hina Sugita, Mexican defender Reyna Reyes and USWNT stars Sam Coffey and Crystal Dunn. Racing Lousiville’s roster features Brazilian forward Ary Borges, Chinese forward Wang Shuang, Finish defender Elli Pikkujämsä, Northern Ireland forward Rebecca Holloway, South African forward Thembi Kgatlana and American midfielder Savannah DeMelo.

  • The United States Under-17 Women’s National Team features two NWSL players, San Diego Wave FC’s Melanie Barcenas and Washington Spirit’s Chloe Ricketts.

  • 22 of the 74 NWSL players on international rosters represented their respective countries in the 2020 Olympics, including six players from Canada’s gold medal winning team in Houston Dash forward Nichelle Prince, OL Reign’s Jordyn Huitema and Quinn, Thorns captain Christine Sinclair, San Diego Wave keeper Kailen Sheridan and Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle.
