Thirty-six NWSL Players Advance to Knockout Stage of 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup

NEW YORK (August 3, 2023) - Thirty-six NWSL players will compete for their respective national teams in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Round of 16, set to kick off Saturday, August 5 in Australia and New Zealand. Representing eight nations, at least one NWSL player will feature in six of the eight Round of 16 competitions ahead of the quarterfinals.

Thirty-six NWSL players will compete for their respective national teams in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Round of 16, set to kick off Saturday, August 5 in Australia and New Zealand. Representing eight nations, at least one NWSL player will feature in six of the eight Round of 16 competitions ahead of the quarterfinals. A record 62 players from the NWSL competed for a league-best 16 national teams during the group stage of the tournament. NWSL players accounted for 12 goals throughout the first round, including Racing Louisville FC and Brazilian forward Ary Borges, who recorded the first hat trick of the tournament in a 4-0 win over Panama, and U.S. striker Sophia Smith, who tallied a brace in her World Cup debut to help secure a 3-0 tournament-opening victory for the back-to-back champions. Of the Round of 16 teams featuring NWSL talent, the U.S. continues its quest for an unprecedented third-straight World Cup title Sunday, August 5 as the team takes on Sweden at 5 a.m. ET. Co-host Australia takes on Denmark Monday, August 7 at 5:30 a.m. ET, while Jamaica faces Colombia Tuesday, August 8 at 3 a.m. ET after advancing past the group stage for the first time in the team's World Cup history.
