Tobin Heath surprised with Hall of Fame induction by special "RE–CAP" guest: her mother

Tobin Heath’s very first fan got to break special news to the recently retired soccer star: she is a first ballot Soccer Hall of Famer.

In a Q&A segment on The RE–CAP Show, Cindy from New Jersey wrote in with a question for Heath. “Is that my mom?” Heath asked before her wife, co-host, and USWNT teammate Christen Press could even get to the question.

“How does it feel to be inducted into the Hall of Fame in your first year of eligibility?”

The realization dons on Heath as she looks past the cameras and out walks Cindy from New Jersey – her mother.

Press can barely contain her excitement, quite literally smiling and kicking her feet.

“I’m so proud of you,” her mom said, tearing up. “This is such an incredible honor.”

Heath announced her retirement over the summer after almost three years of being sidelined due to injury. Five days after her announcement, she was placed on the Hall of Fame ballot, meaning she will be inducted after just one year of eligibility, a rare accomplishment.

“I get the question all the time ’So, are you coming back?’ and kind of like, well, the writing’s on the wall,” Heath said on The RE–CAP show in July.

For the USWNT, she had 181 caps, 36 goals – including a goal in the 2015 Women’s World Cup – and 42 assists. In the NWSL, she played for the Portland Thorns and OL Reign (Seattle Reign FC), and in Europe, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Paris St. Germain. She is widely known as one of the most inventive and electrifying players in women’s soccer, sometimes nicknamed “Tobinho” after Ronaldinho, whose own skill with the ball captivated audiences like Heath did during her career.

Over the course of her career, Heath won three NCAA Championships, two Olympic gold medals, two World Cups, and two NWSL Championships with the Portland Thorns -- but Heath will always be “one of one.”
