Oh, how the tables have turned!
Just two weeks after Spirit star Trinity Rodman crashed her boyfriend, Ben Shelton’s, U.S. Open press conference, she got the script flipped on her.
After scoring a brace in the Spirit’s 2-0 win over the Reign, Rodman put on a headset for a post-game interview – and so did Shelton.
Rodman could barely hold it together as Shelton asked his first question, bending over laughing and unable to contain her smile.
To her surprise, Shelton came prepared for his big journalism debut.
“First of all, two great combo goals today. It was really cool to see the assists. Can you talk about your dynamic with Croix Bethune? How you guys play out there together off each other is really cool to see,” he said.
The laughs turned into serious praise of her teammate, Bethune, who has assisted two of her three goals this season.
“I think Croix is a really smart player, I don't even really have to look at her for myself to know that she’s going to play me back,” Rodman said. “She’s cheeky like that, and I knew it was coming back to me. She’s a great player.”
Shelton wasn’t done yet, taking the opportunity to ask Rodman about the injuries that plagued the team and getting the roster healthy again.
“It seems like you guys are getting a lot of players back, really coming into form right before playoff season,” Shelton said. “What are your hopes and goals for the team for the rest of this year and what do you guys want to do going forward?”
“There’s been a lot of interchange with players and formations and lineups, and we’re still trying to get our groove together,” Rodman answered. “It’s nice to have a healthy squad and to have a lot of attacking threats so we can score.”
The couple tossed it back to the studio and again broke out into a fit of laughter. It’s great to know that this athletic power couple can always fall back on journalism should the whole “professional athlete” thing not work out.
