Trinity Rodman and Ben Shelton are an athletic power couple, but that doesn’t mean they take themselves too seriously.
Case in point: Wednesday night’s U.S. Open press conference.
Shelton, who is currently ranked No. 6, advanced to the third round after he defeated Pablo Carreño Busta in straight sets. When he took the podium after his match, Shelton answered question after question until he heard a familiar voice.
“So how did it feel not being able to serve faster than 135 [mph] today?”
About halfway through the reporter’s question, Shelton puts his face in his hand, realizing it was in fact his girlfriend.
“Why did you give her a question?” he answered.
“I just know you like to serve big, and it wasn’t breaking 140 today,” Rodman followed up earnestly.
“It was cold outside, so I think that was the main reason I was focused on hitting spots,” Shelton said. “I didn’t hit those spots, so maybe I should just serve bigger, but that’s something that, you know, I'll definitely work on next time.”
It was the last question of his press conference, so as Shelton got ready to leave, he couldn’t help but get one exasperated rib in.
“Let anyone in the room at this point,” he said to laughs in the room.

Don’t let the gentle roasting fool you, though. Last week, Rodman took a red eye from San Francisco to New York after the Spirit played Bay FC at Oracle Park to be there for Shelton’s match. As she watched his match on Wednesday, Rodman’s support was clear as she smiled from the first row.
But if payback is on the table, maybe Shelton will be getting a media credential for a Spirit match someday soon.
