Futbol is life, and futbol is family.
That's the lesson U.S. Women's National Team Coach Emma Hayes wanted to impart on her team as members of the 2025 NWSL Championship winning Gotham team arrived to camp this week. It was a long few days of celebrating in the bars of San Jose and the streets of New York, but the work isn't done for those on international duty.
When the Gotham players arrived at their hotel, assuming their teammates were asleep, they were surprised to find them lining the hallway. The team cheered, clapped and lit up their phone flashlights in celebration.
At a meeting earlier that day, Hayes asked her players to show up for their teammates.

"The important thing for us is celebrating all of our people, no matter what, and yes, there are losers from the game of the weekend," Hayes said. "If you're not in treatment and you're not asleep, I think it's a good thing to do to come and we celebrate them as they run into their rooms. Sometimes it's really difficult. I'm sure for the Spirit players, you're like, 'That's the last thing I want to do,' but you know, we are also U.S.A. players when we're in here so we celebrate them as U.S. players."
They didn't disappoint.
As Rose Lavelle, Emily Sonnett, Jaedyn Shaw, Jaelin Howell, and Lilly Reale rounded the corner, they expressed genuine shocked joy -- until MVP chants started.
"Please don't say that," Lavelle said, in a way that was begging for the attention to find a new target.
The reunions were sweet, funny, and wholesome. Croix Bethune, who was on the losing side of the Championship game, gave Shaw a hug, and said to be ready to start making Tiktoks.
We will all be seated for that crossover content.
Watch the surprise below.
