Below is a roundup of notes from Week 14 of NWSL regular season action
NOTES TO KNOW
KANSAS CITY MAKES HISTORY
On Saturday, the Kansas City Current broke the league unbeaten streak set by the Seattle Reign in 2014, securing their 17th undefeated match since October 7, 2023, with a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash. The performance was bolstered by a brace from forward Temwa Chawinga, her third of the season and the fastest regular-season brace for the Current with the goals three minutes apart. Chawinga, who currently leads the NWSL Golden Boot race, has 11 goals on the year, good for the Current’s single-season record.
PRIDE IN HOLLYWOOD
With a 2-0 win over Angel City FC on Sunday, the Orlando Pride extended their undefeated streak to 15 games this season off a brace from forward Adriana, the second of her NWSL career. The two goals for Adriana, who hopes to see her name on Brazil’s Olympic roster this week, marks the 15th and 16th goal scored by Brazilians in the NWSL this season. The Pride’s Brazilian contingent leads the league in the category with eight goals.
Zambian phenom Barbra Banda joined in on the action in the 96th minute, registering her 11th goal this season. Banda sits in second in the NWSL Golden Boot race behind Kansas City Current forward Temwa Chawinga due to assists. Banda is approaching the Pride’s single season record for goals of 13, set by Marta in 2017, as well as the league’s single season record of 18 tallies set by Sam Kerr with the Chicago Red Stars in 2019. Goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse, who was recently called into England’s upcoming training camp, tied her single-season clean sheet record that she set last year with seven shutouts.
RED STARS DOMINATION
The Chicago Red Stars defeated the San Diego Wave FC, 3-0, at Snapdragon Stadium off an own goals and tallies from forward Mallory Swanson, her sixth of the season, and rookie Jameese Joseph. Joseph also assisted Swanson’s goal, making her the third rookie this season to record a goal and assist in the same match. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher registered her 45th career regular season clean sheet, becoming the first keeper to earn 40 with one club, the other five shutouts came during her time with the Boston Breakers.
BAY’S BACK
Bay FC recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time after defeating Racing Louisville FC, 1-0, off the team’s first penalty kick attempt and penalty kick goal in club history. Forward Asisat Oshoala stepped up to the penalty spot in the 76th minute to give Bay the game-winning goal. The Northern California-based expansion team is on a two-match win streak.
