NWSL After Dark rarely disappoints, but this game was especially electric. Angel City and Washington Spirit put on a show – with a special WNBA guest looking on.
It was an action-packed game in Los Angeles Thursday night when Angel City hosted the Washington Spirit. The match ended in a 2-2 draw that saw a first pro goal, a PK rebound, and a celly slay – and that’s just what happened on the pitch.
12 minutes in, Trinity Rodman earned a penalty kick, and though it was blocked, she wasn’t deterred. The rebound off Angelina Anderson’s glove spun just a few feet in front of her, and Rodman launched forward, burying the ball in the back of the net.
There was no way she was missing that shot twice.
Just a few minutes later, Angel City rookie Evelyn Shores scored her first NWSL goal with some help from Gisele Thompson. Her teammates mobbed her in celebration.
The pass from Thompson made for her fifth assist of the season, tying her for the second most in a single season for Angel City. She also entered a five-way tie for most in the league.
After a Spirit own goal, Croix Bethune entered the chat to equalize for Washington. Bethune jumped up to head a perfect cross from Leicy Santos into the net and then hit them with an aura-filled celly.
The 2024 NWSL Rookie of the Year showed out Thursday night, breaking ankles and making it look easy, and she did so in front of the newly minted 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Paige Bueckers of the Dallas Wings.
Bueckers got a warm welcome from the Angel City home crowd, and after the game, she linked up with Rodman and Croix Bethune. She sure picked a great game to be pitchside.
And this was only Thursday of Week 21. If this is any indication of how the rest of the weekend will be, buckle up.
