• Group standings Dream start for France France opened the tournament in front of 45,621 fans in Paris, and they won in style, 4-0 over Korea Republic. Eugénie Le Sommer scored first in the ninth minute. Wendie Renard then scored twice with her head. Former Portland Thorns FC midfielder Amandine Henry put an emphatic exclamation point on the win with her goal in the 85th minute. [Empty Body] Sam Kerr scores her first FIFA Women’s World Cup goal It didn’t take long for Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr to score Australia’s first goal of the tournament, and the first of her Women’s World Cup career. While her initial penalty kick attempt was saved, Kerr pounced on the rebound to give Australia a 1-0 lead over Italy in the 22nd minute. [Empty Body] Italy’s late-winner vs. Australia Kerr’s goal made it a dream start for Australia, but they lost to Italy on a dramatic stoppage time goal scored by Barbara Bonansea. Bonansea scored the game-tying goal in the 56th minute and the game-winner in the 95th minute to give Italy the win. [Empty Body] Cristiane leads Brazil to 3-0 win over Jamaica Orlando Pride forward Marta missed the match due to a left thigh injury, but it was no problem for Brazil. Cristiane scored a hat trick, her final goal a well-struck free kick that bounced off the underside of the crossbar and into the goal. She now has ten career Women’s World Cup goals, the ninth player to score ten or more career WWC goals. [Empty Body] Women’s World Cup debuts for South Africa, Jamaica and Scotland Three of the tour teams making their Women’s World Cup debuts played their first game this weekend: South Africa, Jamaica and Scotland. South Africa lost to Spain 3-1, but former Houston Dash forward Thembi Kgatlana scored Banyana Banyana’s first Women’s World Cup goal in the 25 minute. [Empty Body] Washington Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews started for Jamaica as they made their Women’s World Cup debut vs. Brazil. [Empty Body] Scotland’s Claire Emslie, who will make her NWSL debut for the Orlando Pride after the tournament, scored Scotland’s first-ever Women’s World Cup goal in the 79th minute vs. England. It wasn’t enough, as England prevailed 2-1, but it was a historic goal for Scotland. [Empty Body]
