The United States and Japan will play their final game of the Tournament of Nations tonight at the StubHub Center, Carson, California. Kickoff is at 10 p.m. ET and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2/UDN and streamed on the ESPN app.Twenty-three NWSL players are on the rosters for tonight’s game, with 22 on the roster for the United States and Seattle Reign FC midfielder Rumi Utsugi representing Japan. The United States rebounded from a 1-0 loss to Australia in the first game with a dramatic 4-3 comeback win over Brazil on Sunday. Chicago Red Stars midfielder Julie Ertz scored the game-winner in the 89th minute as the United States scored three goals in the game’s final ten minutes after falling behind 3-1. Seattle Reign FC forward Megan Rapinoe and Red Stars forward Christen Press also scored late in the comeback. North Carolina Courage midfielder Sam Mewis scored the first United States goal in the game. Utsugi started and wore the captain’s armband for Japan in their first game, a 1-1 draw with Brazil on Thursday, and entered as a second half substitute in their second game, a 4-2 loss to Australia, on Sunday. The United States is second place in the tournament with four points, behind Australia with six. The United States can win the tournament with a win over Japan and some help from Brazil vs. Australia. The USWNT needs beat Japan, Brazil to beat Australia, and between the two scores, overturn what is currently a plus three goal differential lead for Australia.

What to Watch For

The United States and Japan have famously met in the finals of three major international tournaments: the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup final (won by Japan in penalty kicks), as well as the 2012 Olympic gold medal game and the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup final (both won by the United States). The USWNT is 26-1-7 all-time vs. Japan. The two teams last met in June of 2016 — a 3-3 draw that saw Japan equalize in stoppage time and a 2-0 win for the Unite States that was called in the 76th minute because of weather.
