Kashima, Japan – The United States women's soccer team will return home with yet another medal after earning Bronze at the Tokyo Olympics with a 4-3 defeat of Australia. The medal for the United States marks the sixth total in the seven Olympic Games that has contested women's soccer. This was the second match up between the two teams this tournament as they battled to a 0-0 draw to finish up pool play.

In the 8' the United States had their first great chance at goal when Christen Press sent in a ball that made the Matilda's goalkeeper dive and tip the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick that the U.S would end up capitalizing on for the games opening goal. Megan Rapinoe scored the earliest goal in a women's Bronze Medal game in the 8' after recording an Olympico. After Press earned the corner kick, Rapinoe stepped up to take it and her ball curled in for the goal. Australia would quickly find the equalizing strike as current NWSL career goal scorer, Sam Kerr fired in a shot from close range that deflected of the United States goalkeeper for a goal in the 17'. Caitlin Foord was credited with the assist on the play. In an exciting start to the game, the U.S. Would score a second goal shortly after Australia tied the game. The Matilda's struggled to clear the ball in their defensive area as the ball found Rapinoe who used a beautiful side volley to the top left of the net to give the United States a 2-1 lead in the 21'. Carli Lloyd would finish out the half strong giving the United States a 3-1 lead in the 45'+1 when she buried a left footed shot into the far post for her ninth career goal at the Olympics which tied Abby Wambach for the most Olympic goals in USWNT history. Lloyd would find the back of the net again in the 51' to stand alone in the record book with the most Olympic goals for the women's national team after she out ran all the defenders and got the ball just outside the center of the box where her shot just beat the keeper to give the United States a 4-1 lead. The Matilda's did not give up as Kyah Simon sent in a cross to a wide open Foord who headed it into the back of the net in the 54' to cut into the lead, 4-2. Australia then brought it to a 4-3 game in the 90' when Emily Gielnik fired a great ball from about 25-yards out to the bottom left corner of the net as once again Foord was credited with the assist. History was made on both sides tonight as Lloyd moved into second place for the most caps in both USWNT and international soccer history while Australia played in its first soccer medal match regardless of gender in its countries history.
